Papua New Guinea defines exotic. It is the second largest island on the planet (after Greenland, and Australia counting as a continent), home to many different tribal peoples (some former cannibals) speaking hundreds of languages (some lost), and an incredible number of fascinating orchids (with many yet to be discovered). It is thought that there are tribes on the island that have not yet had any contact with the modern world, and in places that remote, there are bound to be new plant and animal species awaiting discovery. Papua New Guinea is a botanical treasure trove, and Dendrobium lawesii is one of its many treasures. Its long, skinny pseudobulbs/canes arch over gracefully, and produce clumps of long-lasting, intensely colored blooms. Interestingly, these flowers bear a strong resemblance to another Dendrobium denizen of the Papua New Guinea, the cute and incomparable Dendrobium cuthbertsonii, although cuthbertsonii’s canes are about 1-inch long, far shorter than the typical lawesii’s full-grown length of 8- to 12- inches. Den. lawesii’s canes drop their leaves before producing blooms, but can continue to produce clumps of flowers for many years. The variety we’re offering here is a bicolor type, producing flowers with mostly red coloration but orange tips. This species can handle both cool and warm conditions, and will grow well mounted if given high humidity conditions. Definitely a very rewarding species, and its ease of growth makes it suitable for beginners wanting to branch out to more exotic orchids!
