FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (this is a work in progress; we’ll be adding more info soon)

1) OK, I got my orchid (and I’m a newbie). Now what?

The best thing to do is to check out our growing instructions page and our Do’s and Don’ts page.

2) What is this beige/brown/yellow moss-like stuff in the pot? Should I throw it away?

No, don’t throw it away! The stuff is New Zealand Sphagnum Moss, one of the best potting media you can use for many (most?) orchids. Why New Zealand sphagnum moss? Because NZ sphag is better than Canadian and Chilean sphagnum. It’s fluffier and lasts longer.

If your plant came in NZ Sphagnum, just keep growing it in the same moss and pot for at least six months, or until you see lots of new root growth, or in rare cases, there’s no more room for new growth in the new pot and the plant is being squeezed out (this is very obvious; if it’s not obvious, you don’t need to repot).

3) I just got my orchid! Should I repot it?

Generally, no. Orchids you receive from us probably will not need to be re-potted for six to 12 months.
