While there are some orchid hybrids that skilled orchid breeders have bred to produce black blooms, very few orchid species (i.e., found in nature) bloom black. Maxillaria schunkeana is one of these, however. It looks very exotic in bloom, but as is the case with many exotic orchids, it’s actually very easy to grow, and easy to flower! We’ve grown this in a wide variety of conditions, with lows in the 30s F in the winter and temps into 105 F in the summer, and it just keeps chugging along!
Its small size make it perfect for any environment, although do try to humidity high around it. We’ve grown these in pots as well as mounteed on wood, and this species does just fine either way. A very enjoyable orchid to grow!
The plants we’re currently offering are seedling size (or small divisions) with around two growths in 2-inch pots, or slightly larger plants with 3+ growths also in 2-inch pots.
