P. rothschildianum is one of the most distinctive orchids in the world. Its majestic, imposing appearance has impressed
orchid folk for centuries. It incites lust in orchid collectors like few other species and is one of a handful of orchids
for which orchid smugglers have served time in prison (no joke!).

Found only on the slopes of Mount Kinabalu on the island of Borneo, its unique form and regal bearing has inspired a rabid following, including breeders who have devoted decades to improving the species in both form, color, and vigor. Many of the finest specimens were bred at the Orchid Zone in California, and the plants we’re offering count all four of their ‘grandparents’ as among the finest rothschildianums ever produced by the Orchid Zone (and worldwide). You can ask for no finer genetics than found in these plants!

The great orchid collector and dealer, Frederick Sander (after whom many orchids are named), named this species after one of his patrons, Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild of the famous banking family. Rothschild’s collection of orchids was one of the finest in Victorian times, and he has a number of species named after him. Paphiopedilum rothschildianum is certainly the most impressive, however!
