==========================

Here’s a non-romantic question for those over the age of 30: Have you ever made a friend that you immediately just got along with, and you wish you’d met them earlier in life? That’s how you’ll feel about the Oncidium Gold Dust (a member of the Twinkle family)! This is an orchid that you wish you’d met earlier, and you’d enjoyed for much longer. It is such a friendly, pleasant orchid to grow, and when it blooms, it can easily hold its own against more showy or expensive orchids.

Here are some of the excellent qualities of this unpretentious, friendly orchid:
1) Very easy to grow, not fussy
2) Multiple bloomings per year (on a larger plant)
3) Outrageous number of flowers (on a larger plant)
4) Very fragrant
5) Miniature, perfect for windowsill, or if your windowsill is already packed, you can grow this on a hanging mount!
6) Tolerant of cool to warm conditions. PLEASE NOTE: Plants are NOT IN BLOOM when shipped.

Please examine the photos carefully to get a sense of the size of the plant you’ll be receiving; there is a size reference (pen or coin) in the picture. Some plants may have leaf ends trimmed (if the ends have dried out, which is a common occurrence with this orchid). BS (Blooming Size) plants are capable of blooming any time. Plants will be shipped potted up in 2.25-inch square pots, typically in New Zealand Sphagnum Moss.

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT BLOOMING SIZE (BS) PLANTS:
A couple of customers recently purchased Blooming Size plants but didn’t think they were. One customer literally accused us of whittling the pencil in the photo down to a smaller size to make the plants look bigger. (Umm… I guess they’re accusing us of chiseling, literally?) We do our best to present fair and accurate photos of the plants we’re offering at a given size, and give plenty of information for prospective buyers to make an informed choice.

This variety CAN AND DOES bloom on small plants — we have plenty with old flower spikes. Obviously, if it has a flower spike (old or not), and is of a size comparable to others with flower spikes, it is by definition Blooming Size.

You can be assured that if you select the BS size, you will receive a plant that is of a size capable of blooming and has either bloomed in the past (therefore, it’s Blooming Size, right?), or is of a size comparable to ones that have bloomed.

PLEASE — take a look at the photo showing three of these plants side by side with plenty of size references (the 2.25-inch square pot, the pencil (heh), and the coin (it’s a quarter, not a dime).

If you have a problem with size and feel that we are trying to mislead you in our photos, PLEASE PASS on this (and on all of our stuff). This is one of our top-selling orchids, and whenever we make a batch of these available, they sell out in a couple of weeks. Not bad for a hybrid originally crated in 1958!

A MINIATURE FAIRY TALE (OR PARABLE OF SIZE)

Imagine that all your life the only dogs you’ve ever seen or interacted with are Labradors, German Shepherds, and Golden Retrievers. You know that when full-grown they’re about waist high to you, more or less, but an exuberant (or poorly trained one) one can get on its hind legs, plant its muddy front paws on your chest, and lick your face.

Now in the age of the Dread Virus stalking the realm, you’re stuck in your 850 sq. ft. city apartment thinking you might like to get a dog. Then you read online about this very interesting and affectionate breed that originates from the ancient land of the Aztecs, now known as Mexico. You read the description and look at photos of this dog, and it says that this is a miniature dog. You can see it’s a bit smaller than the Germans/Labs/Goldens you’ve known, and it has SUCH a cute face and the description is so brilliant and wonderful, you decide to get a mature one (cuz it’s potty-trained and you don’t have time for a puppy). Alas, even though the photos have rulers and other size references, and the description mentions that these are MINIATURE dogs, you’re SO IN LOVE with their cute faces that you overlook all of the careful admonitions and cautions about the size of these canines. These dogs, called “Chee-Wah-Wahs”, look so cute, and since they’re supposed to be miniature, they’ll fit just right in your 850 sq. ft. apartment in the city. You can’t wait to get it! Your life will be 1000% better with your new, mature – and housebroken — dog!

(Now keep in mind in this story that you’ve ONLY ever seen Germans/Labs/Goldens.)

So the big day rolls around, and your new mature Chihuahua arrives. It seems very excited to meet you, but even on its hind legs, it only gets up to your knees! “WHAT IS THIS?!” you thunder. “This isn’t a MATURE dog, it’s so small, it’s a puppy! WHAT THE…!?! I ordered a mature (and potty-trained) dog! I didn’t order this! I’ve been DECEIVED!” You contact the seller and demand an explanation. The seller politely reminds you that the photos and descriptions of this dog all describe it to be a MINIATURE dog breed. You reply: “But it’s so small! It can’t be a MATURE dog, it MUST BE A PUPPY!” The seller, biting his tongue (hard enough to bleed but you don’t know this), says, politely, that this breed is a miniature breed, and even the MATURE ones of this MINIATURE breed are MUCH smaller than the only dogs you’ve ever known (i.e., Germans/Labs/Goldens). He gently reminds you that the online description cautions, warns, and caveat emptors potential buyers that these are MINIATURE dogs, and MUCH SMALLER than dogs you might be used to, like Germans, Labs, and Goldens, which are everywhere, even at supermarkets and Home Depot. These Chihuahuas are fine dogs, but it’s not fair to compare their size to the only dogs you’ve ever known, when there are many hundreds (or even thousands) of other dog breeds.

You pause to consider this, and you realize that the seller was ABSOLUTELY, 100% CORRECT, and that he is a True Wizard of Dogs, and you should have believed everything he’d worked so hard to write and present on the original listing. You feel ashamed at your outburst, and in a rare moment of humility, you say “Learned Sir, you are correct. I am sorry for doubting your honorable word (and photos).” Plus, your new Chihuahua, whom you will eventually name “Speedy G”, is SO ADORABLE and you find yourself falling in love with him (the dog, not the Wizard), and so grateful to this Wonderful Wizard/Seller who was Courteous, Honest, and Accurate in every word and deed. And you and Speedy G live happily ever after. THE END.
