Everyone knows that when you mix yellow and red you get orange. But it’s not always true with orchids, and definitely not with this Cymbidium hybrid. One parent of Cym Street of Gold has a deep pure yellow flower, while the other a deep red, almost maroon bloom. You’d think crossing these together would produce a nice orange, but instead the cross produces a whitish-pink bloom with a dark red lip. Well, genetics is weird and sometimes unpredictable, and if you come from a large family, you know what I mean.
Cym. Street of Gold is a lovely, easy to grow orchid that is warm tolerant and does not need temperatures to dip below 55 F, so all of you growers in FL need to get one of these now. Wait, there’s more: it can produce two flower spikes from a new bulb, always a desirable trait in Cymbidium breeding. It is a compact grower, and reaches blooming size in a 4-inch pot! And a large happy plant can produce 2 – 3 bloomings per year. Oh yeah, its blooms produce a lovely fragrance, too!
This orchid is hardy, fast-growing (for an orchid), and would be a perfect starter Cymbidium for any beginning grower.
